Nursing Cover Letter Examples for RNs & New Grads

A strong nursing cover letter connects your units, certifications, and patient-care strengths to the specific posting, in under a page. Read the examples below, then generate one matched to your job posting.

Example 1: Experienced Med-Surg RN applying to a Telemetry unit

Dear Hiring Manager,

I'm applying for the Registered Nurse – Telemetry position at [Hospital Name]. I'm a BSN-prepared RN with four years on a 32-bed Med-Surg/Tele unit, current ACLS and NIHSS certifications, and a compact license.

On my current unit, I care for 4–5 patients per shift, many on continuous cardiac monitoring. I've learned to catch subtle rhythm changes early and escalate with clear SBAR communication. Your posting emphasizes stroke-ready care and patient education, two areas I've focused on as a relief charge nurse and preceptor.

I recently led a unit-based effort to standardize discharge teaching for heart failure patients, working with our educator to create a one-page teach-back checklist. I'd bring the same focus on safe, consistent care to your team.

Thank you for your time. I'd welcome the chance to discuss how I can support your unit.

Sincerely,
Taylor Morgan, BSN, RN

Example 2: New grad applying to a nurse residency program

Dear Nurse Residency Selection Committee,

I'm excited to apply to the [Hospital Name] New Graduate RN Residency for the cardiac service line. I graduated with my BSN in May 2026 and passed the NCLEX-RN in July.

My 144-hour capstone on a cardiac step-down unit confirmed my interest in cardiac nursing. Working with my preceptor, I managed a three-patient assignment, monitored telemetry, and delivered discharge teaching using teach-back. Before nursing school, I worked two years as a patient care technician, which taught me how much teamwork on a busy unit matters.

Your program's structured preceptorship and focus on evidence-based practice are exactly the foundation I'm looking for. Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
Alex Chen, BSN, RN

Example 3: Travel nurse short contract note

Hi [Recruiter Name],

I'm interested in the 13-week ICU contract at [Facility], starting [date]. I'm an RN with 5 years of adult ICU experience (CCRN), a compact license, and 6 completed travel contracts in Level I and II trauma centers. I'm comfortable with CRRT, titrating vasoactive drips, and Epic and Cerner charting. My resume and skills checklist are attached. Thank you!
